Blessed to be a Blessing - Psalm 67
Psalm 67 is a beautiful prayer for God's blessing, not just for
Israel, but for all the nations of the earth. It reflects a deep understanding
that God's blessings are not meant to be hoarded but shared. As we explore this
Psalm, we will see how God's favor towards us is intended to spread His glory
throughout the world. In a world craving peace, purpose, and prosperity, this
message is more relevant than ever.
Petition for God's Grace (Ps. 67:1-2)
"May God be gracious to us and bless us and
make his face shine on us—so that your ways may be known on earth, your
salvation among all nations."
David begins by asking for God's grace and blessing,
with the ultimate purpose of making God's ways known on earth and His salvation
among all nations. Think of a small stream that feeds into a larger river. As
the stream flows, it nourishes everything in its path, but it also contributes
to the strength and reach of the river. Similarly, God's grace in our lives is
meant to flow outward, impacting others.
We should daily seek God's grace, not just for our own benefit,
but with the intention of sharing His love and truth with others. This petition
reflects a missional heart. Connection to Christ: Jesus Christ embodies God's
grace (John 1:14). He came to reveal the Father and bring salvation to all. As
recipients of His grace, we are called to make Him known.
Praise for God's Goodness (Ps. 67:3-5)
"May the peoples praise you, God; may all the
peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the
peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth."
David shifts to a universal call to praise God. The
emphasis is on God's righteous governance and His equity towards all nations. Imagine
a symphony where every instrument plays a unique but harmonious part. Each note
contributes to the beauty of the whole. Our collective praise is like that
symphony, reflecting the goodness and majesty of God.
Regularly engage in worship, both personally and corporately,
recognizing God's goodness and fairness. Our praise should be a witness to
others of God's character. Jesus is the reason for our praise. His life, death,
and resurrection reveal God's goodness and justice (Hebrews 1:3). Through
Christ, we see God's perfect rule and are invited to join in the eternal
praise.
Proclamation of God's Harvest (Ps. 67:6-7)
"The land yields its harvest; God, our God,
blesses us. May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear
him."
David concludes with a declaration of God's material
and spiritual provision. The earth yields its harvest as a sign of God's
blessing, which in turn leads to reverence and awe among all people. Consider a
farmer who plants seeds expecting a harvest. The growth and eventual abundance
are signs of the farmer's hard work and the goodness of the soil. Similarly,
God's blessings in our lives should be evident and cause others to recognize
His goodness.
Recognize and celebrate God's blessings in your life. Use these
blessings as opportunities to share about God's faithfulness and provision with
those around you. Jesus referred to Himself as the bread of life (John 6:35)
and spoke of a spiritual harvest (Matthew 9:37-38). Through Him, we receive
both our daily needs and the ultimate provision of eternal life.
Psalm 67 invites us to see our blessings as part of God's larger
plan to reach the world with His love. By petitioning for His grace, praising
His goodness, and proclaiming His harvest, we align ourselves with His mission.
As we do so, we reflect Christ, who is the ultimate source of every blessing
and the hope for all nations. Let us be conduits of God's blessings, bringing
His light to every corner of the earth.
